5-Minute Midday Reset Ritual to Beat Afternoon Fatigue
By Caitlyn Somerville

Does 2 PM hit you like a freight train every day? One minute you're crushing your morning tasks, the next you're staring at your computer like it's written in hieroglyphics, googling "is it too early for a third coffee?"
I used to think afternoon crashes were just adult life. Like taxes or pretending to understand cryptocurrency. Then my grandmother taught me about Katsuryoku - awakening your vital energy. Honestly? Game changer.
This isn't about chugging more caffeine or forcing yourself to power through. It's about working with your body's natural rhythms instead of against them.
The Katsuryoku Midday Reset Ritual
Here's my go-to ritual for when my energy decides to take an unscheduled vacation:
Step 1: Pause Everything (30 seconds)
Step away from whatever you're doing - even if it's "urgent." (Spoiler alert: it can wait 5 minutes.) Light your Katsuryoku candle. I keep my Citrus Vitality candle right on my desk because those orange and grapefruit notes are like sunshine in a jar, and the jasmine adds this perfect touch of inspiration.
Step 2: Breathe in Energy (2 minutes)
Take deep, intentional breaths while focusing on the invigorating scents. Pro tip: breathe with your mouth slightly open to really experience the full aroma. The citrus scents naturally wake up your nervous system without the jittery crash of caffeine.
Step 3: Move Your Body (2 minutes)
Do some gentle stretches or movement while your candle burns. Neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, even just standing up and swaying. Between auditions, I do these stretches in bathroom stalls. During slow periods at Parla, I do shoulder rolls behind the bar. It probably looks ridiculous, but honestly? I don't care because it works.
Step 4: Refocus Your Intention (30 seconds)
Set a clear intention for the rest of your afternoon. Maybe it's "tackle one task at a time" or "approach this project with fresh eyes." Give your brain a new direction instead of just hoping the fog lifts on its own.
Why This Actually Saves Your Afternoon
Here's the thing about afternoon crashes - they're more mental than physical. Your brain has been making decisions all morning, and decision fatigue is real. This ritual hits reset by engaging different senses and giving your mind an actual break.
Citrus scents plus gentle movement naturally increase alertness. It's like giving your nervous system a gentle nudge instead of screaming at it with more caffeine.
Plus, taking 5 minutes to pause prevents you from spending the next 2 hours in a productivity death spiral where you accomplish nothing because you're too tired to think clearly.
Making It Work in Daily Life
Look, I know not every situation is candle-friendly. You can't light candles in most audition waiting rooms or behind a busy bar. But here's what I've learned: consistency matters more than perfection. When you can do the full ritual at home, your energy stays more stable throughout the day.
If you can't light a candle, try this ritual during breaks or as soon as you get home. I keep a travel tin of Citrus Vitality in my bag for particularly brutal audition days. Sometimes just opening it and taking a deep breath is enough to shift my energy.
